One of my co-workers told me I should blog some of my
adventures while I am still considering Vlogging some of my future ones. I have
tried blogging in the past, but like most of everything I do online, I got
bored. I kind of agree with my co-worker, that Blogging may be better. I have
watched several hiking Vlogs over the last few months, and it seems like the
hikers tend to hike their hikes according to where they get enough reception or
WiFi to upload their Vlogs. It takes a whole lot more memory to save videos and
then to edit it them on your device can sometimes be tricky and time consuming.
I use my Samsun 4s Active still, since it hasn’t died yet, to take photos and
some videos. But, I don’t want me shooting shots to take so much away from my
adventures that I feel overwhelmed or that they are taking away from the
overall experience. I go outdoors to unplug. The pictures just help remind me
of the serenity I find when away from the city lights and work.
So, hiking and the outdoors is not new to me. I remember
some of my earliest hikes being in junior high on Catalina Island. In high
school, we did spring trips throughout the southwest called Caravan. This was a
weeklong trip to various National Park Service sites, horse packing through
various ranches in central Arizona, or fishing adventures in eastern Arizona. I
have always treasured those Caravan experiences and the memories made. However,
after high school, I didn’t really take advantage of the outdoors much. Not
until a deployment, when I and another deployer decided that we should hike out
to the top of a hill and back, partially as exercise, partially just to walk
and talk about life. It was during these hikes, and some other military
adventures, that I rediscovered my desire to spend more time outdoors. I still
ride and race bicycles, but, hiking is at a different level.
Hiking allows me
to slow down and take the time to enjoy the views, even if the track is rocky
and annoying. Then I really have to slow down. Each time I venture out and take
photos, I realize something new, whether that I need to jot down notes of the
locations or that I should have taken one more shot! From this point on, I will
make sure that when I do document adventures, I try to remember the name of the
location or even date I am there. For some of my images from last fall, or for
all of them, I mostly forgot to upload them in a correct order or to mention where
I was. I will probably buy a larger micro card to store more images,
particularly for any longer trips. Who knows, I may still get an action camera,
but it’s not a necessity for me, just a nicety.
